AMERICAN COOP FAQ

HOW MANY CHICKENS CAN I HAVE?

There are two important factors to consider when determining how many chickens should be in a chicken coop. The henhouse and the run area.

THE HENHOUSE: We use the 1-foot rule, meaning 1-foot per chicken on the roost bars. (e.g. if you have 12 feet of roost bar, and you're free-ranging, you can easily house 12 chickens.) You will see recommendations elsewhere saying 8-10 inches of roost bar per bird is fine. However, in our experience the 1-foot rule is best because it avoids overcrowding, which can lead to other issues.

THE RUN: Chickens need and prefer as much room as possible. If you cannot free range your chicken outside of the coop, the minimum amount of space needed is 10 square feet per chicken. (e.g. the 6' wide American Coop with a 12' run is 72 square feet, which will comfortably house up to 7 chickens without free-ranging.) We suggest this for the health and well-being of your chickens.

The 6-Foot Wide American Coop can accommodate 6-12 chickens with free ranging.

The 8-Foot Wide American Coop can accommodate up to 24 chickens with free ranging.

DOES MY COOP COME WITH A PREDATOR APRON?

Only turnkey and custom coops come with a predator apron. We do have a video on how to attach your predator apron to your coop here.

WILL YOU SHIP TO ME?

Yes, we ship any place in the world where freight can be received. You can find out about more about shipping here.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR MY COOP?

Before your coop arrives, here’s what to prep:
Level ground is a must—uneven spots can cause issues with door alignment and assembly.

A base isn’t required (our bottom lumber is pressure treated), but it can help with leveling and stability.

Avoid low-lying areas to prevent flooding, and make sure there’s good drainage.

·
Check for tree branches or obstacles, especially if you're using our turn-key or roll-off delivery.

·
Don’t forget to account for the egg hutch in your measurements—it adds
16.5" to the width (or 33" if you have hutches on both sides).
·
Lastly, check local ordinances—some areas have limits on flock size, require
permits, or have placement restrictions for coops.

HOW DO I PROTECT MY COOP FROM THE ELEMENTS?

Weatherproofing Your Coop = Longer Life

To protect your coop from sun, rain, and snow, we recommend
Seal all seams exposed to water/snow with caulk or clear silicone. Make sure
it’s compatible with your chosen paint, stain, or finish.
Paint with quality exterior paint (we like Sherwin Williams Marshmallow for white). If painting before assembly, leave part labels visible.
Stain or oil: Wood stain works well, or go natural with polymerized or double-boiled linseed oil—safe, fast-drying, and water/sun-resistant.·

For Acre™ parts:

o   Use only water-based paint or stain

o   Choose colors with LRV of 55+

o   Check Modern Mill’s website for approved coatings/colors, or contact us for help with lower-LRV options.
